The criminal division specializing in financial corruption cases at the Court of First Instance in Tunis ruled yesterday, Monday, to sentence former Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and former ministers to six years in prison in the case involving the lifting of the freeze on the assets of businessman Marwan al-Mabrouk, the son-in-law of the late President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The Tunis Afrique Press Agency reported today, citing a judicial source, that a six-year prison sentence was also handed down in the same case against Marwan Mabrouk, a former general manager of a holding company, and a former economic advisor. The same source explained that the sentences were handed down in the case concerning the “lifting of the freeze on businessman Marwan Mabrouk’s assets” by a decision of a mini-cabinet meeting held in January 2018. The Tunis Afrique Presse news agency also quoted a judicial source as saying that the same court sentenced Marwan al-Mabrouk to 14 years in prison on the same day in a case related to “money laundering.”
